Foreword

Before you lies the third annual report of the William Carey Missions Foundation, covering the year 2024.

With great gratitude we present this report, as a testimony to the work that took place this year. As a board, we look back on a year in which the blessing of the Lord was tangibly present. The project “De Olijfberg” has been able to experience further deepening and expansion. New opportunities in the fields of education, community care, and evangelism were seized and carried by many.

We are especially grateful that people have once again been touched by the Gospel. In everything we were able to undertake, it has remained our desire that dependence on the Lord determines our path and gives direction to our actions. We pray that in this report you will see not merely human effort, but above all the work of the Lord, who in His faithfulness and goodness works through us and all those involved with WCM.

On behalf of the board, we express the wish that you may experience His blessing, in your personal life and in your involvement with this work.

About William Carey Missions

William Carey Missions was founded in 2021 by a group of dedicated Christians from various church backgrounds, united by one desire: to make the Gospel known in word and deed. Inspired by the Great Commission of Jesus Christ — “Go therefore and teach all nations…” (Matthew 28:19) — we are committed to giving shape to this calling in our time.

This commission calls us to: actively go out to the nations, make disciples through teaching, baptism, and practical discipleship, and live according to everything Christ has taught.

Mission therefore encompasses more than proclamation alone. It is also doing justice, showing love in practice, and obeying the two great commandments: to love God above all, and our neighbor as ourselves.

At William Carey Missions we believe that discipleship begins with the daily following of Christ. It is precisely in ordinary life — in our homes, streets, schools, and communities — that we may reflect who He is. The work in Ecuador and the Netherlands is therefore carried by this desire: to help people flourish in the footsteps of Jesus.

The name of our foundation honors William Carey, the pioneer of Reformed faith mission in India. Although our field of work differs, we share his passion for: Bible translation work, motivating local mission within churches, training and sending out workers into God's Kingdom, and being moved by the social needs within mission fields.

As an independent foundation, we are not bound to a single denomination, but form a movement of faith mission: carried by calling, united by vision.

WCM Workers

During 2024, the following workers were able to contribute to the work of the William Carey Missions Foundation:

Peter and Marije Fris have lived in Quevedo, Ecuador, since 2017, and have been formally connected to the work of WCM since October 1, 2021. They lead the project Monte de los Olívos (De Olijfberg) in Quevedo. Peter and Marije have six children: Juda, Anna, Josia, Naema, Ruchama, and Abigaïl.

Nick and Nynke den Heijer also lived in Quevedo for a period in 2024 with their children Luca, Sela, and Nehemia. After completing the WCM training program, they were sent out to Ecuador in January 2024. In September 2024 they decided to return to the Netherlands, and their partnership with WCM came to an end. As a board, we are grateful for what they were able to contribute, both from the board in the Netherlands and later as workers at De Olijfberg.

Looking Back at 2024

2024 was a year of growth, dedication, and spiritual deepening. Despite challenges in the surrounding area, the church was able to witness tangible signs of hope, restoration, and expansion. Below is an overview of the main activities and developments:

Church Life & Equipping

  • Baptism services: Several adults and children were baptized—a visible testimony to new life in Christ.
  • Equipping Sunday school leaders: Leaders were equipped to guide children with love and biblical depth.
  • Election of leaders: Church members took on responsibility for various ministries such as pastoral care, deaconry, music, youth, and more.
  • Church growth: The church grew to approximately 100 involved people, including children and young people.

Children's and Youth Work

  • Vacation Bible week: More than 200 children from the neighborhood took part in a week full of Bible stories, games, and fellowship. School supply packages were handed out, and a large team of volunteers from the church committed themselves wholeheartedly.
  • Youth camp: 17 young people from the church went to camp—a valuable time of deepening, friendship, and spiritual growth.

Care & Support

  • Addiction care: Four addicts were taken in and supported. Despite relapses, the desire remains to keep reaching them with love and restoration.
  • Health: Several members of the Fris family were affected by a dengue outbreak. There was concern and tension, but also deep gratitude for their recovery.

Construction & Facilities

  • Tiny house completed: A multifunctional space was completed for shelter and conversations.
  • Stage built: The church space was enriched with a new stage for services and presentations.
  • Water well established: An important step toward self-sufficiency and sustainability.
  • Covered playground: A safe place for children to play and gather.
  • New entrance gate & wall restoration: Strengthening the security and appearance of the grounds.
  • Start of construction on shelter rooms: Construction of four shelter rooms began, two of which are now under construction.

Safety

  • Increasing unrest: The influence of gangs in the region increased.
  • Break-in on the grounds: A break-in occurred, resulting in damage and loss.
  • Armed robbery of a worker: A harrowing incident that underscores the need for protection.
  • Security measures: Night watch and camera surveillance were implemented.

Women's Work

  • Two women's conferences: Both gatherings drew approximately 80 women. Speakers from various churches and regions of Ecuador shared teaching, testimonies, and encouragement.

Partnership & Visits

  • Visit from the Netherlands: Volunteers contributed to construction projects and education—a valuable exchange of help and involvement.
  • Partnership with GlobalRize: The church works together with GlobalRize and an online seminary to strengthen spiritual formation.

Evangelism

  • Preaching in the drug clinic: The Gospel was shared in a place of deep need.
  • Christmas evangelism service: A festive service with a radio interview to invite people and spread hope in the city.

“And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” — Acts 2:47

2024 testifies to God's faithfulness, to the power of community, and to the desire to bring light into darkness. We look forward to what He will do in the coming year.

Looking Ahead to 2025

With gratitude for what God has done in 2024, De Olijfberg looks forward to the coming year with great expectation. 2025 promises to be a year of further expansion, deepening, and impact—both practical and spiritual.

Church Development & Team Strengthening

  • More paid workers: Efforts are being made to appoint additional paid workers who will support the growing work at De Olijfberg and ensure continuity.
  • Equipping and selection of school staff: Church members are being equipped and selected for future roles within the planned Christian school—an investment in quality and calling.

Construction & Facilities

  • Completion of shelter rooms: Construction of four shelter rooms has begun; in 2025 the first two will be fully completed and put into use.
  • Start of school construction: Active fundraising efforts are underway. As soon as the funds are available, construction of a Christian school will begin—a milestone for education and future prospects.
  • Water well: The new water well is being further integrated into the grounds for self-sufficiency.
  • Covered playground & grounds improvement: The playground is being further furnished, and the new entrance gate and wall restoration contribute to safety and appearance.

Evangelism & Community Work

  • Evangelism projects: New initiatives are being set up, including open-air gatherings in the central park and visits to the hospital to pray, encourage, and share the Gospel.
  • Christmas evangelism & follow-up: The impact of previous outreach is being deepened with follow-up visits and creative forms of testimony.
  • Preaching in the drug clinic: The Gospel continues to resound in places of deep need.

Care & Education

  • Medical project: Work is underway on a structural medical initiative, focused on basic care, education, and spiritual support.
  • Homework support project: This project is being further professionalized with the deployment of tutors, so that children receive structural support in their learning process.

Children's and Youth Work

  • Kids' club: The kids' club remains active, with meetings every two weeks—a place of joy, teaching, and community.
  • Vacation Bible week: In 2025, two weeks will be organized—one at De Olijfberg and one in another location in the area. This way, even more children can be reached with the Gospel and loving attention.
  • Youth camp: Renewed efforts will focus on spiritual deepening and connection among young people.

Partnership & Visits

  • Visit from the Netherlands: Volunteers remain welcome and contribute to construction projects, education, and encouragement.
  • Partnership with GlobalRize: The partnership with GlobalRize and the online seminary is being further deepened for spiritual formation and digital reach.
