Spreading light and offering hope in a dark environment of drug violence, gangs, and poverty. That is what “De Olijfberg” does! The center in Quevedo, Ecuador is open every day.
The 10,000 m2 site includes various facilities, such as a large 300 m2 event hall, a large kitchen with restaurant, a modern classroom and computer room, a sports field, a covered playground, plenty of greenery, and tiny houses used for shelter.
There are daily activities aimed at supporting and guiding the vulnerable local population, including the following:
- Homework guidance and study/career guidance (Monday through Thursday);
- Before- and after-school care for children from families facing difficulties;
- Counseling (Monday through Thursday);
- Courses;
- Shelter for former addicts for reintegration and work-and-learn programs;
- Medical projects;
- Children's club and youth group;
- Bible study and church services (Sunday and Tuesday).
Construction is continuously underway to further expand facilities and activities. In addition, the focus is on making the project self-sustaining in terms of energy supply, water supply, and recycling. Part of the electricity is generated using solar panels, and the center has its own water source.
